My Favorite Canon Lens for Professional Photography

A great lens can shape the look, feel, and consistency of your images.

Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8 Review: Why It's My Favorite Canon Lens for Professional Photography

If you had asked me a few years ago if I would ever spend more money on a lens than I did on my camera body, I would have laughed.

When I upgraded to Canon's mirrorless system and purchased my Canon EOS R6, I knew I wanted to invest in quality RF lenses. But when I looked at the price of the Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM, I hesitated. Spending more on a lens than my brand-new camera body felt almost impossible to justify.

Today, I can honestly say it was one of the best investments I've ever made for my photography business.

Love at First Photo

Ironically, the very first photo I took with this lens wasn't even supposed to be a great one.

I had just left the camera store after buying my Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8 and headed straight to Wednesday night church. The kids were playing outside, and my son started running toward me. I lifted my camera, snapped a quick photo, and looked at the back of the camera.

I was speechless.

His eyes were incredibly sharp, the background melted into beautiful creamy bokeh, and the colors seemed to come alive. In that moment, I knew I had just leveled up as a professional photographer.

Every hesitation I had about spending more on a lens than my camera body instantly disappeared. Years later, it's still the most-used lens in my camera bag.

Crystal Clear Sharpness

As a professional branding photographer, commercial photographer, and event photographer, I need equipment I can rely on every single time I press the shutter.

Beautiful Bokeh That Makes Your Subject Stand Out

One of the things I love most about the Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8 is its beautiful, creamy bokeh. It creates incredible separation between the subject and the background, giving every image a polished, professional look.

Whether I'm photographing branding clients, portraits, or corporate events, this lens consistently produces stunning background blur. During sunset, light filtering through the trees turns into soft, glowing circles, while string lights, chandeliers, and city lights at night become beautiful, dreamy orbs that add atmosphere without distracting from the subject.

The combination of the constant f/2.8 aperture, exceptional sharpness, and gorgeous background compression is one of the biggest reasons this has become my favorite Canon RF lens. It creates the signature look I want my clients to remember.

Incredible Low-Light Performance

One of my favorite events to photograph each year is the Blood Cancer United Light The Night in Tulsa and Oklahoma City. This inspiring event brings together cancer survivors, families, donors, and supporters to celebrate hope while raising funds for blood cancer research. If you'd like to learn more or make a donation, visit the official Light The Night website: Light The Night

These evenings are filled with genuine emotion, and the Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8 is the perfect lens for capturing those heartfelt moments. The 200mm focal length allows me to photograph smiles, tears, hugs, and celebrations from a respectful distance, giving families the space to simply be together. Even after the sun sets, the lens delivers beautiful, sharp images in low light, allowing me to focus on telling meaningful stories instead of worrying about my equipment.

Surprisingly Lightweight

For a professional 70-200mm lens, I was pleasantly surprised by how compact and manageable the RF version is.

I live with an autoimmune condition that can cause inflammation in my joints, and I’ve also had surgery on my right thumb to replace a tendon. Because of that, comfort and weight aren’t just preferences for me—they’re essential.

Even with those challenges, I’m able to shoot handheld with this lens for extended periods without issues.

I regularly photograph events that last several hours, and this lens allows me to keep working without unnecessary strain.

During especially long events, I can still attach it to my monopod for added support, but it’s reassuring to know I don’t have to rely on it constantly.

That flexibility makes a huge difference when you're photographing conferences, galas, fundraisers, and corporate events.

My Most Used Lens

Out of all the lenses in my camera bag, this one gets the most use.

It's the lens always on my main camera.

It comes with me to every shoot.

It has become one of the most valuable tools in my business.

Whether I'm photographing branding sessions, nonprofit galas, corporate fundraisers, conferences, or portraits, it consistently delivers the quality my clients expect.

Is the Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8 Worth It?

Absolutely.

Yes, it's a significant investment.

Yes, it's expensive.

But if you're serious about photography and want a lens that delivers incredible image quality, outstanding autofocus, beautiful bokeh, excellent low-light performance, and professional reliability, I believe it's worth every penny.

I had concerns before buying it.

Those concerns disappeared after taking my very first photograph.

Years later, I can honestly say I've never regretted the purchase for a single moment.

If I had to replace every piece of gear I own, this would be one of the first lenses I'd buy again.

If you're considering upgrading your Canon mirrorless camera with a professional telephoto zoom lens, I highly recommend taking a look at the Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM.

It's the lens I trust for branding photography, corporate events, fundraisers, portraits, and so much more.
